Shop 100% cotton fat quarters for patchwork and quilting, from individual prints to coordinated fat quarter bundles. Choose single fabrics to build your own colour palette or explore ready-made bundles featuring fabric collections and combinations selected here at Morris Works.
All Morris Works Studio Cut fat quarters are cut in-house to our generous Studio Cut size of approximately 20" × 22" (50 × 56cm). This applies whether you choose a single fat quarter, a fat quarter bundle or a full fat quarter collection, giving you a little more fabric to work with than a standard metric fat quarter. We distinguish these from manufacturer-cut fat quarter bundles, which may vary in size depending on the manufacturer. You'll find the cut type, size and number of fabrics clearly shown on each product page.

Fat quarters are one of the most useful ways to buy quilting fabric. They're large enough for plenty of patchwork pieces, but small enough to experiment with colours and prints without committing to a longer cut. Choose individual fat quarters to fill a gap in your fabric stash, or a coordinated bundle when you'd like a group of fabrics that already work together.
And if your collection of fabric seems to grow rather more quickly than it gets used, you're certainly not alone. Our article The Fabric Stash: Why Quilters Keep Collecting takes a light-hearted look at why choosing and collecting fabric can be every bit as enjoyable as sewing with it.
The traditional industry standard for a fat quarter starts with one yard of quilting fabric. The yard is cut in half across its length and then in half again through the width of the fabric, creating four squarer pieces rather than four long, narrow quarter-yard strips. With quilting cotton approximately 44" wide, this produces a fat quarter measuring around 18" × 22" (46 × 56cm).
In shops that sell fabric by the metre, a metric fat quarter may instead be cut from 50cm of fabric divided in half across the width, producing a piece approximately 50 × 55cm (19.7" × 21.7"), depending on the width of the fabric.
At Morris Works, we do things a little differently. Our Studio Cut fat quarters measure approximately 20" × 22" (50 × 56cm). It's a small difference, but one designed with patchwork cutting in mind.
A long quarter and a fat quarter contain roughly the same amount of fabric, but the shape of the cut is quite different.
A long quarter is cut across the full width of the fabric, creating a long, narrow strip. A fat quarter is created by taking a larger section of fabric and dividing it in half lengthwise and widthwise, producing a shorter, wider and more square-shaped piece.
For patchwork and quilting, the squarer proportions of a fat quarter can be more versatile. They give you greater flexibility when positioning and cutting squares, rectangles and larger patchwork pieces, whereas the narrower shape of a long quarter can limit the size and orientation of the pieces you can cut.
Whether the fabric is sold by the yard or by the metre will affect the exact dimensions, but the fundamental difference remains the same: a long quarter is long and narrow, while a fat quarter is shorter and wider.
Our Studio Cut fat quarters are cut in-house from the quilting fabrics we stock by the metre. Rather than cutting them as metric fat quarters, we use our generous Studio Cut size of approximately 20" × 22" (50 × 56cm).
We chose this size because so many common patchwork cuts work in multiples of 2½". From the 20" side of a Morris Works Studio Cut fat quarter, you can cut eight 2½" strips, four 5" sections or two 10" sections, without losing that useful extra portion of fabric.
You'll find Studio Cut clearly identified on our product pages, so you can distinguish fabrics cut here at Morris Works from manufacturer-cut bundles.
